Frequently asked questions
Is Morocco safe for families with with kids?
Yes, generally very safe. Moroccans are extremely family-oriented and love children, who often act as a fantastic "ice-breaker" with locals. Petty crime like pickpocketing can occur in crowded areas
How should we handle the attention our children receive from locals?
Moroccans are often affectionate with children (admiration, cheek-kissing, head-patting). This is a cultural sign of welcoming. If you or your child are uncomfortable, a polite but firm, "Non, merci," or gently moving away is usually respected.
What is the dress code for children?
There is no strict dress code for children. They are fine to wear shorts, T-shirts, and comfortable Western clothing.
Is the tap water safe to drink?
No, it is not recommended. Stick to bottled water, which is cheap and readily available. Be cautious of fruits or vegetables washed in tap water unless they have a peel (like oranges).
Are there any specific health concerns?
Traveler's diarrhea (upset stomach) is the most common issue. Encourage frequent hand washing, use hand sanitizer, and be mindful of what you eat. Stick to cooked, hot foods, and peeled fruits.
Stray animals (cats and dogs): Avoid touching or petting stray animals, as rabies is a concern.
Heat and Sun: Dehydration and heatstroke are a risk, especially inland. Ensure kids wear hats, use high-factor sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.
Is baby formula/food and diapers (nappies) easily accessible?
Disposable diapers are widely available in large supermarkets and pharmacies, often at a similar price to home. Dried or prepared baby food is less common outside of major cities. You may need to pack your own or be prepared to feed kids simple table foods (bread, yogurt, fresh fruit).
What is the best way to get around with kids?
Private Tours/Transfer: This is the most popular, comfortable, and easiest option, offering flexibility, door-to-door service, and a safe experience, especially for long drives (like to the Sahara).
What are the best kid-friendly activities in Morocco?
Sahara Desert: Camel treks, sandboarding, and sleeping in a luxury Berber camp. This is often the family highlight.
Marrakech: Visiting Jemaa el-Fna square (best at sunset/evening), taking a family cooking class, and swimming at a waterpark (like Oasiria).
Coastal Towns: Beach time, windsurfing lessons in Essaouira, or horse/camel riding along the beach.
Atlas Mountains: Easy hikes, visiting a traditional Berber village, and seeing the Ouzoud Waterfalls.
Is it better to travel independently or use a specialist family tour operator?
For a first-time trip, many families prefer a tour operator or local agency. They handle the complex logistics (drivers, accommodation with pools/family rooms, and activity bookings), allowing the parents to relax and focus on enjoying the experience. Independent travel is also feasible but requires more planning.
When is the best time to visit Morocco with kids?
Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November) are ideal, offering warm, sunny weather that avoids the intense summer heat (especially inland).
Avoid July and August, when temperatures in Marrakech and the desert can be too high for comfortable travel with children.
